A New Era of Blue Enlightenment

The New Era of Blue Enlightenment event took place the 12th -14th of July in Lisbon, Portugal. Commissioner Moedas (research, science and innovation) hosted the event to celebrate the launch of the South Atlantic Research and Innovation Flagship Initiative between the European Union, Brazil and South Africa.

Participants enjoyed a blend of plenaries, panel discussions, inspirational keynote speeches focusing on climate and ecosystem approaches, earth and ocean observation and forecasting systems, food security, fisheries management and aquaculture and ocean technology. The ClimeFish partners were actively involved in the event: Courtney Hough from FEAP, Rosa Chapela from CETMAR and Anna Danielsdottir from Matis participated in the panel discussions, coordination of the event and gave presentations.

A Statement on Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Cooperation between the European Union, Brazil and South Africa was signed during the event. This Statement will build on the Declarations of Intent on Marine Research and Innovation Cooperation with Brazil and South Africa, and the development of the South-South Framework for Scientific and Technical Cooperation in the South and Tropical Atlantic and Southern Ocean and intensify joint cooperation on common interests like climate and ecosystem approaches, earth and ocean observation and forecasting systems, food security and fisheries and aquaculture management, and ocean technology.
